Removing bees from difficult places

Beegone Founder Peter Higgs with Her Majesty The Queen

Ugley Village Hall was absolutely buzzing with members of SWBKA on Tuesday evening this week.

We were all keen to learn about “Removal of bees from difficult places”. This wasn’t about the odd bee that gets into your bee suit and causes a lot of trouble, but the removal of bees from chimneys, roof voids, floors, trees and many other tricky extractions!

Company Founder, Peter Higgs, formed his company PGH Pest Control/Beegone almost 20 years ago with the help and support of the Princes Trust. His aim was to remove honeybees (and other bees) and relocate them to new homes with beekeepers or farmers. Peter was very worried about how most pest controllers were dealing with bees, i.e., spraying and killing them, and wanted to do something more environmentally conscious, and save the bees!

I’m sure we have all had a call from someone asking for advice or help with unwanted bees living in a building. Most of us would probably tell the person to phone a local pest controller for advice. I’m sure that some pest controllers would try to extract the bees and honeycomb, but there are those who for speed and to keep cost down would spray. This kills the bees, and of course our honeybees would probably move in to steal the honey, they then bring poison back to our hives potentially killing our bees and contaminating our honey crop, so not a great move!

Bees can’t always be removed safely and kept alive, in that case Beegone would opt to seal the bees in. This would also kill the bees but without introducing poisons into the environment.

The good news is that we don’t have to get involved in bee extractions, we have a local branch of Beegone based in Essex. Our local guy is Mark Rosindale, and he would be very happy to advise on the extraction of unwanted bees from difficult places. If you have a local case that needs help please give him a call, if he does extract the colony, they might even end up in one of your hives! Free bees!

Beegone are a business so would obviously charge the home owner for any sort of pest control measures.
They don’t deal with Asian Hornets or swarms.
